SHEIK
Curator Lagos Traffic Galleries, Lead Designer @ Lagos Traffic Couture, Visual Activist and Conveyor Lagos Traffic Project
BACKGROUND:
Hey there, I'm SHEIK, the creative mind behind Lagos Traffic Galleries and the Lead Designer at Lagos Traffic Couture. Consider me a bit of a nomad—always on the move, soaking up diverse cultures, and proudly embracing the title of a global citizen.
I'm more than just a curator and designer; I'm a visual activist, constantly seeking to turn chaos into art through the Lagos Traffic Project. Growing up in a household with a Nigerian father and Trinidadian mother, I was immersed in a myriad of music genres—classical, Afrobeat, RnB, Hip-hop, Calypso, Soca - later embracing the rhythms of Afrobeat(s) and Afro-global fusion.
My friends and family often tag me as a Creative, Trendsetter, and Innovator, labels I wear proudly. But beyond the titles, it's the rich blend of my cultural influences that defines my work. My creative sparks are ignited by memories rooted in the music of legends like Fela Anikulapo Kuti.
Fela's songs are timeless, echoing truths that still resonate today, exposing the flaws of politicians and lawmakers worldwide. His lyrics and rhythms capture the "Suffering and Smiling" mentality, recounting stories of discord, tears, and blood—a narrative that continues to inspire my work.
This collection catalogue is my ode to that inspired creativity—an unwavering desire to CREATE, RE-IMAGINE & EVOLVE. Each piece is more than a garment; it's a story, a reflection of Fela's legacy, and a commentary on our contemporary world.
So, dive into the "Suffering and Smiling" collections, explore the intricate designs, and join me on this journey of art, fashion, and the resilient spirit of Lagos Traffic.
